The Chick-Fil-A Leader Academy is hosting Springfest on Saturday.
This is the first year that Derby High School students have participated in the Chick-Fil-A Leader
Academy. The Academy is made up of 30 students, chosen from National Honors Society. Once a month these students get together and perform leader labs, which help students to better their leadership and servitude skills.
“The kids learn a different angle to leadership; that is not all about you being a chief, or the Indians following, when you give of yourself. That builds a natural leader,” English teacher Robin Groskurth said.
Due to the expected poor weather, Springfest has been moved to the high school.
It’s from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. There will be food trucks: the Big Apple, Kona Ice, BS Sandwich Press and Uno Mas.
There also is a 16-team volleyball tournament, free-throw shooting contest, a dunk tank, a bouncy house, pie-in-the-face contest and a DJ.
Proceeds from Springfest will benefit the Wounded Warriors Project and the Pando Initiative. Springfest is almost entirely student-run.
“The kids came up with what they wanted to do; they’re planning it all, executing it all, with direction from me because I’m the facilitator for it,” Groskurth said.
